Lynne Hedrick is offering 5 homeschool classes, plus coaching in the SWAT team speech and debate club. Each class meets either one or two days each month, with varying amounts of work to complete at home in the intervening time. Classes will meet on the days noted in the class description in the Wahiawa area of O’ahu. Students may enroll in any number of the classes as meets your needs. Parents are free to drop off and pick up, but are also welcome to stay and observe the classes. Class descriptions are as follows: American Sign Language (ASL) 1 – 1st and 3rd Wednesdays, 10:00a-11:30a This class is designed primarily for mixed ages, from upper elementary to adults, and younger students may attend with a parent. It will meet on 2 Wednesdays of each month (September to May). Each class will use the Bravo curriculum (produced by Sign Enhancers, a Deaf-owned company and featuring performers from the National Theater for the Deaf). Along with video segments, the students will participate in group activities, quizzes, and will have homework practice. Students will learn vocabulary, grammar, etiquette, and elements of Deaf culture, and should bring a folder or notebook to class for handouts. The fee for this class is $15 per year per student. Class Dates are: 9/9, 9/23, 10/7, 10/21, 11/4, 11/18, 12/9, 1/6, 1/20, 2/10, 2/24, 3/9, 3/23, 4/6, 4/20, and 5/3. It will meet on 2 Wednesdays of each month (September to May). Along with video segments, the students will participate in group activities, quizzes, and will have homework practice. Chemistry – 1st Tuesdays, 12:00p – 2p This class is designed primarily for middle and high school students. It will meet on the first Tuesday of the first full week of each month (September to May). Each class will include instruction in the major topics of chemistry. The experiments will center on culinary applications and will teach the following topics of chemistry through cooking and baking: Reading Structural Formulas, Ionic Bonds, Covalent Bonds, Emulsions/Hydrogen bonds, Colloids, Gels, Suspensions, Molecules, Solutions, Crystallization, Proteins & Enzymes, Biochemistry, Surface-to-Volume ratios, Effects of Heat, Acids/Bases, Oxidation/Reduction, Boiling, Freezing, & Pressure, Elements, and the Periodic Table. The total materials and fee cost for this class is $50.00 per year per student. Students will need access to the internet or library resources to research their topics and find the assigned reading selections (most reading assignments will be available to borrow from my personal library), and will be asked to bring a 1" binder with 9 dividers to class each month. Class Dates are: 9/8, 10/6, 11/3, 12/8, 1/5, 2/9, 3/9, 4/5 and 5/2 World History I (BC) – 1st Thursdays, 9:00a – 11:00a This class is designed primarily for high school students. Younger students may be allowed with permission of instructor. It will meet on the first Thursday of the first full week of each month (September to May). Each class will include instruction in a particular time period of world history, presentation of individual study topics, and review/discussion of homework. Each student will choose a packet of work to complete during the month before the next class. Packets include timeline, map, and general questions as well as guided research questions specific to a certain region. The students will be expected to complete their research and prepare a short oral presentation of the resulting information. Students will bring a copy of their research for each class member to add to his/her individual notebook. Together we will build an overall picture of life during each time we will study. The total materials and fee cost for this class is $25.00 per year. Students will need access to the internet or library resources to research their topics, and will be asked to bring a 2" binder with 9 dividers to class each month. Class Dates are: 9/10, 10/8, 11/5, 12/10, 1/7, 2/11, 3/10, 4/7, and 5/4. World Geography – 1st Thursdays, 11:30a – 2:30p This class is designed for elementary through senior high students. Students do not need to purchase a text. It will meet on the first Thursday of the first full week of each month (September to May). Each monthly class will include a hands-on activity/craft, discussion of homework, oral presentations, food tastings, and a quiz. In the month between classes, students will research the history, geography, current events, and culture of a particular continent in preparation for the next class meeting.. The research assignments are divided into 2 tracks according to age/grade level. The fee and materials cost for this class is $50.00 per year. Students will need access to the internet or library resources to research their topics, and will be asked to bring a 2" binder with 7 dividers to class each month. Class Dates are: 9/10, 10/8, 11/5, 12/10, 1/7, 2/11, 3/10, 4/7, and 5/4. **Students may register and join classes in later months if space is available** NCFCA-affiliated Speech and Debate: SWAT (Speaking Wisdom; Affirming Truth) Team 2015-16 I will be coaching the SWAT team again next year. The team includes 12-18 year old students. We will offer both speech and debate coaching and competition. An informational meeting will be held on August 24th.
