"The Nonfiction Nook is hosting a book giveaway for Laurie Allen Klein’s new nonfiction picture book! THEY JUST KNOW explores how some young animals just know what to do without any help and has all sorts of fun indulging the way kids THINK animals grow up… before setting them beautifully straight. It's great for teaching about instincts, learned behaviors, and animal life cycles. Take a peek and feel free to share!

Mary Martini at UHM, the executive director of the Family Education Training Center of Hawaii, contacted me via email with details of an opportunity that might interest some of my readers. It sounds like an exciting opportunity for local teens! Read on to find out more! Be advised, however, that I have NOT verified any of it. This is NOT a review, recommendation, or endorsement of any kind. Ms. Martini wrote: "We offer a teen internship in sustainable organic farming and gardening at the UHM Agricultural Research Station in Manoa. This hopefully fills some needs or wishes of homeschooling parents and their teens, so I am sending on the information. We have very much enjoyed working with several students from the Oahu homeschooling community, and would value more in our program, as they are fine, independent, and self-motivated learners. Our location is convenient. It is located across from the Long's side of the Manoa Marketplace, on Woodlawn Place. The internship is open to youth from 10th through 12th grade. Interns work in groups of 3-4, each with 1 or 2 college age and older mentors. We vary activities, each session, to draw on different learning styles and maintain interest. Each Wednesday afternoon, the teens learn science, do laboratory work, do field science, build and maintain one section of the farm, produce 1-2 CSA baskets for sale, cook their own meal, from a recipe from one of 10 regions of the world, clean up after themselves, and have a mentoring group meeting. We specialize in teaching the foundational biological sciences that underlay effective organic farming, as well as research methods, and use a textbook that we wrote. We employ University of Hawaii graduate and undergraduate students who are doing their degrees in: Botany, Tropical Plant and Soil Science, Molecular Biology, Natural Resource Management, Chemistry, as well as in the Social Sciences fields. They are all knowledgeable in the science and farming areas and experienced working with and teaching youth. Our staff includes a licensed psychologist and two licensed counseling psychologists who offer individual counseling to family members as requested (paid for by the person's insurance). The internship classes are held on Wednesdays from 2:30-7:15 p.m. at our FETCH Farm Site in Manoa, described above. The sessions include a full dinner from the farm (that the interns prepare for themselves). We also offer a companion program on Fridays, for parents, siblings and other interested family members. The mentoring groups also design and carry out college-level experiments in soil science, botany, aquaponics, hydroponics and other fields, that they can prepare, if they choose, for the State Science fair competition. We familiarize the teens with the UHM campus, Manoa agricultural research station and science related laboratories. We are arranging for them to receive "Master Gardener" certification and eventual partial course credit for the UHM Tropical Agriculture course pathway. The cost of the internship is extremely reasonable, and these funds cover the food costs incurred in participants preparing their own dinner each week. The cost for 10 weeks is $75, or $7.50 per week for instruction, snack, meal and research training for the 5 hour program. I hope the above will be of interest to your families. I have attached a "Teen Internship" brochure, as well as our FETCH Friday Family Night flyer. We will be have an open house for each program, in mid September, for starting programs that week. Please call if I can provide any other desired information. Thank you, much, and hope to hear from you and parents in your network." (The bold emphasis in the quote above was my own.) If you have any questions, please contact the program provider. All the information I have on this topic is provided in this blog post. The contact number provided was: (808) 956-2249. |
