Two great options were recently added to my "Field Trip Ideas" resource page!
1) The BYU Museum of Natural History, which "contains a large collection of vertebrates & invertebrates from Hawaii, the Pacific, and around the world", is located in Laie, is open to the public, and is free to non-profit groups. 2) The James Campbell Refuge, which has over 160 acres of wetland habitat near Kahuku, is primarily devoted to the recovery of Hawaii's four endemic water birds (Hawaiian stilt, Hawaiian moorhen, Hawaiian coot, and Hawaiian duck), which are all considered endangered. The refuge is not open to the public except by guided tours, which are currently being offered "on Saturday mornings at 9:00 AM, beginning October 17 and ending January 31. The tour takes about 90 minutes and consists of a short walk around the refuge and bird viewing opportunities. Visitors will learn about the importance and management of these refuges, as well as get a chance to observe both the endemic endangered species for which the refuge was established, and the migrant shorebirds and waterfowl that often arrive here in the winter". Did you know there is a group of homeschooling families that are starting a new 4H club here on Oahu? They will be meeting 1x/month and the program is for kids 5-18. They have a meeting tomorrow! Check them out for more information...
