Services
- ASYMCA Homeschool Program (Honolulu) - MAY BE INACTIVE or CLOSED. supplemental parent-participation homeschool program with Montessori influence; 808-473-3398
- Field Trip Friends (location varies) - MAY BE INACTIVE or CLOSED due to Covid. Target age range is toddlers to preschoolers (except during the summer, when older children may be involved). This is NOT a parent-led activity or co-op, unlike most other programs listed on this page. This is a fee-based service provided by a family-run business. This is also NOT solely for homeschoolers, but is open to any families with toddlers and preschool age children (older siblings occasionally attend when they aren't in school). However, parent participation is required and it does provide a way to interact with other families in a learning environment on a broad spectrum of topics, so the business is still listed here as a better fit for it than my other resource pages. There are also other co-ops and options for field trips through local homeschool support groups which do similar field trips, usually at a lower cost (since they are not for-profit like this business is). Nonetheless, many families enjoy and appreciate Field Trip Friend's program. A possible alternative (at a lower cost, but requiring parental involvement in organizing events) is the Oahu Homeschool Co-Op, listed below.
- Got Funn? (Windward Mall, Kailua) - Open M-Sat, closed Sun. A children's play center that offers a variety of play areas that helps promote the social, emotional, and cognitive development of young children. Has a preschool prep, drop-off (childcare) option, story time, and open play time. 20% for military.
- Haleiwa Schoolhouse - according to their Facebook page, it is a fee-based "microschool/learning co-op starting in August for homeschool families [meeting] Mondays - Thursday’s from 9am - 2pm on a farm in Waialua."
Stores
- Army & Air Forces Exchange Service / Navy Exchange - MILITARY. Basic school and office supplies, like other big box retailers.
- Barnes & Noble (Ala Moana in Honolulu) - Well known bookstore that carries some educational books, workbooks, and materials.
- Ben Franklin Crafts (Pearl City) - craft, art, and diorama supplies, science kits, holiday decor, and more! Tends to be more expensive than a big box store like Target and certainly more than ordering from Amazon (with Prime's free shipping), but it is a way to buy some of these things locally.
- Costco (Kapolei, Waipahu, and Honolulu) - Requires a paid membership to shop there. Selection varies by location and season, but you can often find office supplies, educational books, workbooks, and kits. They have had decently priced (for Hawaii) white boards, globes, kids chairs & tables, organizational bins, map & ABC rugs, backpacks, and laminators in the past too (they may or may not have them now). Check their books section, the office supply aisle, the end caps, and the seasonal (rotated) toys aisles.
- Fisher Hawaii (Honolulu - a few locations) - A great source a large variety of decently price (for Hawaii) office, art, craft, teaching and educational materials, supplies, and furniture. This is one of my personal favorites for school and office supplies (though your experience may differ, of course).
- Logos Bookstore (Honolulu) - A Christian bookstore that also carries some homeschool curricula. I've been told they can also special order items they do not carry in-store, so be sure to ask for their complete homeschool options and/or ask if they can order what you're looking for!
- Office Depot & Office Max - These two are now one company. There are a few of them on Oahu. Offers a discount to teachers & military (ask for details at customer service)! Ask a store representative for details.
- Sam's Club - Similar to Costco. Requires a paid membership. Selection varies by location and season, but you can often find office and organizational supplies.
- Target (Kapolei, Honolulu - Salt Lake area, Kailua) - Basic school and office supplies, like other big box retailers. Occasionally has a limited supply of unique or seasonal educational materials in their "dollar spot", usually located near the front entrance.
- The Teacher's Place (Aiea) - CLOSED.
- Thinker Toys & Thinker Things (Kahala Mall in Honolulu) - Offers educational and creative-play toys and games, craft kits, and some workbooks (like Kumon) and limited art supplies. (Their supply is subject to change, of course, so give them a call first if you're looking for anything in particular.)
- Walmart (Kunia, Pearl City, Mililani) - Basic school and office supplies, like other big box retailers.
Other Stores of Interest
- The Growing Keiki (Haleiwa) - Carries clothes, toys, and other items for babies and young kids. A small selection of somewhat educational toys.
- The Lego Store (Ala Moana Mall, Honolulu) - Legos. Of course. Lots of educational uses too!
Some Local Charter Schools...
While not considered a service, per se, the following information is about the local charter schools available in Hawaii. These options do provide support/service to local families who are looking for an option similar to homeschooling (where most of the education is home-based). Please note that these schools change policies frequently and the information below is subject to change without notice. Please do contact them directly with questions and for details.
While not technically homeschooling, some families choose to utilize one of the local public charter schools that allow the majority of education to be done from home by a primary caregiver. There are three home-based learning or hybrid charter schools on Oahu: Kanu o ka 'Aina, Hawaii Technology Academy (campus in Waipahu, last I heard), and Myron B. Thompson Academy (campus in Honolulu). They each have different programs, benefits, and requirements. They usually begin enrollment in February or March, operate on a first-come, first-serve basis, and some grade levels can fill quickly, so be sure to contact them early in the year if you are interested in enrolling your child. Keep in mind that a student enrolled in one of these programs is considered a public school student by the State of Hawaii and is subject to associated oversight and regulations. This also means that a Form 4140 or Letter of Intent is not required (and other homeschool regulations and laws would not apply) for students enrolled in these schools.
